FDA Approves Depressant Drug For The Annoyingly Cheerful | The Onion - America’s Finest News Source

The satiric target of this ad is the overprescribing of drugs today.  It takes an anti-depressent commercial and reverses it, deadening a cheerful person’s emotions so that she can become more acceptable to society, in the process getting rid of her personality and allowing her husband to laze about all day because she isn’t trying to motivate him to enjoy life.  The phrase “battle against exuberance” really makes evident how ridiculous it is for doctors to prescribe medication to so many people just because they are unhappy.  It even suggests natural ways to be despondent: sitting around eating junk food, for example.  In reality, the things that perky people do are the cure, and the cure in this case is the real problem.  But drugs are not the answer.

"This obviously supports Tolkien’s theme that having mushrooms is ontologically superior to not having mushrooms."

It is such an honor to personally know the author of this brilliant article.
